True Balance: Finding that Right Combination of Work and Recuperate

Disclosure: I received no compensation for writing this blog post. Sheryl Meyer was kind enough to loan me her BioMat, but this post was voluntary written out of my gratefulness for her services because I am a believer in the results.

Hello, my name is Bess and I am a workaholic.

They say the first step to recovery is to admit the problem. Well, I’ve said it: I am a workaholic. After working for 46 days straight from mid February through the start of April, broadcasting different swim meets each weekend for Florida Swim Network, I was utterly exhausted both physically and mentally.

My brain was muddled, my back was acting up (I have a Pars defect that I am constantly vigilant of), and I basically wanted to curl into the fetal position and cry.

Fortunately, Sheryl Meyer of Wellness in the Park and Naturalis, LLC. was there to save me.

Start the Recuperation

If you don’t believe in magic hands, Sheryl will make you a true worshipper. As a highly educated, holistic practitioner who specializes in the Bowen Technique, Cranial Structural Therapy, CranioSomatic Therapy, and Kinesiology, its been almost two years since Sheryl took me from daily constant pain to being pain free.

I have to admit that when I first started going to Sheryl, I was a bit skeptical of her services — where was my deep tissue massage and bone-cracking adjustments others had made? Sheryl does none of that. Instead she utilizes gentle pressure on key points in the body, the same utilized by acupuncture and acupressure, to achieve stunning results.

So being back in a crippled mess after my binge-workload, I went in for a session with Sheryl, who customizes my treatments for my current level of pain. Afterward she let me borrow an Amethyst BioMat for the week to truly chase away my demons.

Bess on the BioMat

What’s an Amethyst BioMat, you ask?

According to its manufacturer:

The BioMat is a “pad” which lies on top of your mattress.  It converts electricity through a computerized control panel into Far Infrared Rays (FIR), nature’s invisible light.  FIR was discovered by NASA to be the safest, most beneficial light wave. It penetrates 6-8 inches into the innermost recesses of the body, stimulating healing and regeneration of nerves and muscle tissue layers. Its benefits (just to name a few) include:

  • Relieves minor muscle pain and increases blood circulation in areas where applied
  • Reduces stress and fatigue and supports the immune system
  • Reduced inflammation and increases tissue oxygen (due to increased circulation where applied)
  • Reduces minor muscular back pain and promotes relaxation by application of heat

I’ve used the mat in Sheryl’s office (it’s available for walk-in appointments) but I’ve never taken it home for daily use… oooooh my!

First, I had to decide where to place it – somewhere away from our dogs, cats, and other would-be stressors. Since my son is away at college, his room was the best choice, especially with the peaceful garden outside. (Do you see our Buddha on the right?)

Next I had to unpack and lay out the BioMat. It comes in an easy-to-carry suitcase:

Check out the Amethyst crystals that line the entire mat. The mat has a clear vinyl “window” that allows you to see them – I tweaked the color to show better:

And there’s also a quilted cotton cover that makes it comfortable:

Finally, choose your strength and time settings:

I spent about twenty minutes a day on the mat, and it did help refresh my body, and therefore my mind.

Again from the manufacturer:

The Biomat produces Negative Ions, nature’s energizer, which deliver a molecular level massage.  This accelerates and deepens all healing and cleansing processes. It balances pH by decreasing acidity and is considered the “Master Power Switch” which activates the body’s entire cellular communication system, making every body function work better!

I know, I know, it all sounds too good to be true, right? All I can say is I am true believer based on the results, which I have experienced firsthand repeatedly.

Now if I could only get my husband to try some of Sheryl’s services, both of our backs would be pain free!
